TikTok Smart+ automation: you steer, AI shifts gears

A few days ago, while going through some notes on running ad campaigns, my mind drifted to a single word: shifting gears.

If you run ads, chances are you are still driving a manual.

How to slice the audience, how to divide the budget, whether a creative lands, whether conversions keep up — every detail has to be tuned by hand. The moment the numbers wobble, you are scrambling; swap a creative and you can fall straight back to square one overnight.

It is not that advertisers lack nerve. This work is genuinely exhausting.

At New York Advertising Week in October 2025, TikTok did something interesting: it took a few key parts out of that manual, swapped in an automatic, and handed it all back to you.

What Is Smart+?

Think of Smart+ as the new cockpit for TikTok ads.

In the old days, building an ad group could eat a whole morning — jumping into this backend, opening that tool, and simply locating every entry point. Smart+ gathers all of it behind one door: you just say where you want to go, and it lays out the route.

But the point isn't the word "automatic." The point is that you are the one calling the shots.

Want full automation? Fine. Want semi-automatic? Also fine. Want everything manual? That works too.

Here is how it works: audience, budget, and creative are broken into small modules. Which ones the AI takes over, and which ones you keep a grip on, is your decision. Want to be a hands-off boss? Let it run. Have a step you really care about? Keep your hands on the wheel.

Being "automatic" is not about handing the wheel to someone else. You set the route and press the accelerator — the AI just changes gears for you.

One survey number stayed with me. Research firm NewtonX asked people who run ad budgets: 93% said AI automation has lifted a big load of repetitive work off their shoulders and that efficiency is genuinely climbing; 90% of executives believe AI is becoming a variable that the next stage of growth cannot skip.

The thinking across everyone is remarkably consistent: only when you are freed from repeating the same actions over and over can you clear the headroom to work out which placements are truly worth the money.

Creatives: The Small Matter AI Just Handles

What ad campaigns always run shortest on is not budget — it is creative, and especially the time to turn a good idea into a finished piece quickly. TikTok stuffed a set of creative tools called Symphony into Smart+, built exactly for the work that sounds small but is a pain to do.

Before you have even picked which video to run, it sorts your best-performing assets from the past, plus the ones AI just produced, ranks them by prediction, and hands them to you — no more digging through source files for an afternoon. Aspect ratio wrong? It fixes it. Music outdated? It swaps it. Need translation plus voice-over? It adds it. Export quality dragging the video down? It gives the quality a boost.

In plain words, making creatives goes from "grinding through the night on your own" to "pressing a few buttons, getting a few options, and picking." That is what really saves time.

Beyond Smart+, another set of updates targets the big promotions: GMV Max launched a Creative Hub. Which creative actually drove orders, and which influencer has just been coasting — one look at the report answers both questions.

In the past you had to guess who was really pulling weight for you. Turn this on and you simply look at the answer.

Money Spent — Who Gets the Credit?

What is the biggest loss in ad placement?

The money goes out, the sale is made, but the report books the order onto the account that got the last click. TikTok wants to straighten out that bill, together with you.

Numbers first: 70% of TikTok users discover new brands and new products on the platform; 61% of users actually complete a purchase after coming across the content.

And Assisted Conversions puts another point on the table: more than a quarter of TikTok-attributed conversions happen when a user watches an ad, clicks into the website, and makes the purchase the same day. Under the old way of counting, that whole slice would have been missed.

So TikTok quietly expanded the attribution system and added a third-party optimization feature, starting with Google Analytics. On the dashboard they already use, advertisers can now see TikTok's contribution directly. In early tests, advertisers saw reported conversions rise by an average of 54%, and cost per action drop by 27%.

Assisted Conversions: same budget, hidden value in plain view

The same ad — the value that used to be hidden is now in plain view.

The highest form of "automatic" is making the same budget stop being a fog: you can see exactly where every step of the impact lands.

The Steering Wheel Is Still in Your Hands

The logic that ties all these pieces together is not complicated:

AI does the heavy, tedious work, while the data, the results, and the compliance come back to you, every bit. So do not fear the unfamiliar.

So many things are like this: when everyone moved from manual to automatic, plenty of people shook their heads and said the driving feel was gone. But now — would you really push the clutch back in?

All that aside: at the next big promotion, may you hold the wheel steady and drive fast.
