A $499 Course, Free This Month. But Most People Who Claim It Will Never Open It

A few days ago, an old friend of mine in marketing invited me to dinner.

Over dinner, he kept venting: his company bought the team a set of AI tools last year, spent serious money on them — and today, the most-used feature across the whole group is writing weekly reports.

I said, don't blame the tools.

He blinked: then what do I blame?

Blame this: nobody ever told him where to point it.

Think about it. A car sits in the garage, and the keys are already in your hand. But you've never learned the rules of the road, never once driven. To you, that car is just a metal box taking up space.

Tools give you capability. It's the people who can actually use them that have the competitive edge.

A $499 Course, Now Free

Back to my friend. What he was missing was a complete playbook, from mindset all the way to hands-on execution. Tools? He'd had those for a long time.

As it happened, a piece of news crossed my feed a couple of days ago.

SmarterX announced that the entire month of September is Marketing AI Month. For this one month, the AI for Marketing course series on their learning platform, AI Academy — normally $499 — is free and open to everyone.

What is Marketing AI Month? It's SmarterX's AI learning month for marketers, built around one thing: giving this course series away for the whole of September.

Free until when? September 30. This month only.

I did the math. Five courses in the series, 3.5 hours altogether. Spread $499 across 3.5 hours and it comes to more than $140 an hour. For an online course, that unit price is not cheap. Now it's zero — they've torn down the barrier to entry.

What Do You Actually Learn in 3.5 Hours

Hearing "3.5 hours," some people will scoff: that short? What can you possibly get out of it?

My view is the exact opposite. Adult learning rewards precision, not length.

These five courses form one line, already laid out in order:

Step one: see the opportunity. What can AI actually do inside marketing, and where is the potential hiding?

Step two: see where things stand. How far along are people in the industry, where are they stuck, and which jobs are about to get carved up in new ways?

Step three: come back to yourself. Go through the work on your desk, pick out the tasks worth handing to AI one by one, and rank them by priority.

Step four: pick your tools. General-purpose large language models, specialized tools — the market is dazzling. Learn to evaluate against your own needs, instead of just going with whoever has the biggest name.

Step five: practice. How to write prompts, how to build your own AI assistant, how to put multimodal and deep research to work.

And when you finish, one more move: write a 30-day action plan.

I love this design. The course isn't there to turn you into an expert. The course is there to make sure you've got something to do for the next 30 days.

Finish everything and there's a professional AI for Marketing certificate too. Put it in your performance review materials and it holds up.

Why Free? Because a Gap Is Getting Wider

You might ask: a $499 course, made free just like that — what's the play?

SmarterX's own research contains a finding that, to me, is more worth chewing on than the giveaway itself: the gap between how far individuals have come with AI and how ready their organizations are keeps getting wider.

In plain words: your employees may already be quietly using AI to get work done, while the company's processes, standards, and budgets are still standing still. You've probably seen this yourself.

You can't fill that gap by buying tools. First, more people need to get clear on what AI can do, what it can't, and where human judgment is worth the most. That's also why they started The AI Literacy Project: to put practical AI education in front of more people.

This free giveaway is part of that very effort.

The courses are self-paced — just move through them at your own rhythm during September. But when you're done, don't rush to close the laptop: on October 1 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern, there's a live Q&A session. SmarterX founder and CEO Paul Roetzer and Chief Content Officer Mike Kaput will both be there. You ask, they answer.

Learn first, then bring your real questions with you. Don't get that order backwards.

Want to Go Further? Read On

Of course, 3.5 hours is enough to lay a foundation. But if you're the person responsible for pushing AI across your company, a foundation alone won't cut it.

October 13–15, they hold their annual marketing AI conference, MAICON, in Cleveland — all about making AI actually land inside an organization: how to set the strategy, how to build the systems, plus the chance to meet a crowd of people working on exactly the same thing.

Learning is for doing. Doing is what makes it worth learning.

Finally, Back to My Friend

At the end of that dinner, I told him: you should claim this course. But I added one condition.

The week after you claim it, pick the single most annoying task on your plate and run it back through the course framework.

He said, deal.

What about you?

The deadline is September 30 — free for this month only. And if you know a marketer who's bought a pile of tools and writes weekly reports at lightning speed, send them this piece.

Free courses are nothing rare. What's rare is the person who claims one and actually opens it.

Here's to handing in a very different action plan, 30 days from now.
